Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson is encouraging Sunshine Coast residents to keep the ANZAC spirit alive by making a special effort to attend an ANZAC Day Service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.
Ms Simpson said that $13.5 million in funding was provided by the previous Queensland Government to help local communities remember the sacrifice made by so many during the First World War. This important anniversary gives us all the opportunity to serve the memory of our service men and women with 141 community events and projects funded through the Queensland Government’s Anzac grant program, in addition to annual Anzac Day events hosted by RSL Queensland.
“More than 57,700 Queenslanders served in the First World War between 1914 to 1918 and I encourage everyone to learn more about our role in the War and its impact on our nation,” Ms Simpson said.
“ANZAC day is a special time to remember and be thankful for the many ordinary people from our local communities who bravely took on extraordinary challenges to serve our nation.”
“It is especially important to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice of the thousands who never returned.”
“Remembrance is about learning from the past to inform our future and it creates an important legacy for generations to come.”
“It is important not only to recognise and commemorate the efforts of individuals who signed up to fight on far shores, but also the contribution of people working on the home front to support that overseas effort.”
