We are all saddened by the tragic domestic violence events over recent weeks and as a community we must step up on this issue to eradicate this violence from our communities.
There are a number of helplines to provide immediate support:
DVConnect Womensline 1800 811 811
DVConnect Mensline 1800 600 636
Elder Abuse Helpline 1300 651 192
Sexual Assault Helpline 1800 010 120
More resources, funding, policing and community-support are all pieces of the puzzle. Often alcohol and drug-abuse are major factors which is why we need strong laws to deal with these issues.
This is why the LNP implemented the VLAD laws, which were the strongest and most effective in the country and worked to ensure Queenslanders felt safe in their homes.
While the LNP was in Government we put in place a Taskforce, overseen by the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce, to look at domestic and family violence. I hope the implementation of the Taskforce recommendations will also assist to stop this violence.
The LNP has also released a consultation paper urging Queenslanders to have their say on proposed disclosure scheme called Clare’s Law. Clare’s Law allows a person to make an application to police for information on whether their partner has a history of domestic violence or sexual offences.
Friends or family members concerned about a loved one’s partner are also able to make an application under the scheme.
