UPDATE: Join the fight to protect the Mudjimba Island coral reef
After leading a deputation to the Environment Department at Parliament House last year with passionate stakeholders who want to protect the Mudjimba Island reef through the installation of permanent moorings, we were given a commitment of a feasibility study.
The Minister’s office has finally confirmed the study has been completed. We are now awaiting their advice about when they will release it and what action they will take.
The idea of the permanent moorings is to stop people dropping anchors on the reef and ripping it up by requiring people to using these moorings instead. It would still allow access to this natural treasure.
This beautiful coral reef truly is home to some of our environment’s special beauties. Recently the Marcoola Community Association also hosted a discussion about the island and its surrounds with presenters showing underwater photos of the sea life below. More than a 100 people attended. Thanks to Karen Anderson, Gary Cobb and Captain Gordon Scott, we were treated to a fascinating insight as to the underwater world.
