Unfortunately the Courier Mail did not use my comments in today’s articles in response to their questions about whether I supported assisted suicide and why.
This is the response I gave them last week.
Do you support it?
I don’t support legalising assisted suicide.
Why?
Because I believe more needs to be done to ensure people have equal access to, and an understanding about, quality palliative care first and foremost.
Having just helped nurse my father through a terminal illness, I know this is a very emotional and heart-felt issue.
I also know how grateful our family were to discover the world of difference that being immediately networked to the Sunshine Coast’s palliative services made.
From the pain and symptom management to the outstanding emotional care from their specialist palliative doctors and the domiciliary nurses, my father experienced a truly dignified and pain-free death which may not have been the case otherwise.
