I’m passionate about the Sunshine Coast having a place we can all be proud of to enjoy music and entertainment as well as welcoming the world to a top-notch convention centre which creates more local jobs.
I want to work with Council to deliver an Entertainment, Exhibition and Convention centre in Maroochydore. The Sunshine Coast is the only major centre in Queensland that does not have one and as a result we are missing out on a valuable sector of the tourism market. That’s why I have been asking Council over many years to put forward a suitable plan and funding submission so that we can deliver the infrastructure to bring economic prosperity for the region.
So I was surprised by recent media reports that Council won’t rule out considering a casino as a means of funding this project when none of their briefings mentioned this option and we are still waiting to see the business case and detailed funding submission.
Any suggestion that the Coast must have a casino to get a convention centre is wrong. Many people believe a casino is at odds with the Coast’s “naturally refreshing” family-friendly image and would hurt the poor and most vulnerable in our community.
Please let me know what you think about this.
