The health of Maroochy River waterways will be given a major boost thanks to the Newman Government’s Everyone’s Environment grants.
Environment and Heritage Protection Minister Andrew Powell said Maroochy Waterwatch would receive $100,000 to support its work to keep the Maroochy River catchment and tributaries clean and protected from pollution.
“This funding will help Maroochy Waterwatch improve water quality, biodiversity and the aesthetics of our waterways, as well as help promote community pride in this very valuable ecological and recreational resource,” Mr Powell said.
“Maroochy Waterwatch and its band of dedicated volunteers do outstanding community work by carrying out daily litter patrols in the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers.
“The volunteers also clean up the invasive salvinia weed throughout Sunshine Coast waterways and carry out tests to monitor pollutants in our waterways.
“The work is critical to improving and maintaining water quality and biodiversity in the catchment which is so important to the coast’s economy and social framework.”
Mr Powell said Everyone’s Environment grants would provide $12 million in funding to practical environmental projects over the next three years.
“More than $1.6 million has been allocated in this phase of the grants program, with $3 million committed to projects across the state in round one.”
Applications for round two of the grants will be called for in mid-2013.
