Sunshine Coast students have an opportunity to develop a smart phone application to raise awareness and take a stand against domestic violence during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the initiative would be funded by $3000 from the Queensland Government and organised by SunnyKids.
“This event is a great opportunity for locals to stand together and speak out against domestic and family violence to make our homes and communities a safer place,” Ms Simpson said.
Ms Simpson said SunnyKids, in partnership with Sunshine Coast school chaplains, will organise and run focus groups which will enable young people to develop a smart phone application to raise awareness of domestic violence.
Communities Minister Tracy Davis said Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month raises community awareness and strengthens local support for domestic and family violence prevention initiatives.
“The Newman Government has provided more than $65,000 to fund 23 community organisations, volunteer groups and services across Queensland to host activities, projects and events during May,” Ms Davis said.
“The Government is committed to building awareness, to help prevent domestic and family violence.
“We encourage people to seek help if they suspect abuse is occurring.
“I am urging Queenslanders from all walks of life to get behind community events and activities to help send a powerful message that domestic and family violence is not acceptable.”
Ms Davis said victims, family or friends of people experiencing abuse should call DVConnect on 1800 811 811 (24 hours, 7 days a week) or MensLine on 1300 78 99 78 for advice and help.
