It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas for families who use sport and recreation facilities in Coolum following announcement of $1.1m in funding by the State LNP Government for a major project.
Get Playing Plus is part of the Government’s strong plan to support grassroots sport and recreation by assisting local clubs.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the Sunshine Coast Regional Council would receive a grant, subject to final approvals, to construct a multi-sport field with lighting and other amenities at Coolum to support cricket, rugby league, football and active recreation.
“Sport and recreation clubs are vital for the health and well-being of our local communities so it is important that they have the right facilities for members,” Ms Simpson said.
“This government is working to get more kids into sport and to keep Queenslanders active by boosting facilities and services and lowering the cost for families.
“I am thrilled that the Coolum community will soon benefit from a new multi-sport field and associated facilities and I hope that it gives more people the opportunity to participate in local sports clubs.”
Cr Stephen Robinson said the new $2.4m sporting complex will be located within the Coolum Sports Complex on the David Low Way and will greatly benefit the local community. Sunshine Council have contributed $1.3m towards the project.
Recreation and Sport Steve Dickson said 24 projects state-wide had been approved funding to provide projects state-wide had been approved funding to provide new sport and recreation facilities or improve existing facilities.
“We want to ensure that sport and recreation clubs and organisations have the capacity to offer services and participation opportunities to Queenslanders,” Mr Dickson said.
“This program provides assistance to councils and community not-for-profit sport and recreation organisations to identify, develop and deliver high-need infrastructure projects, to support the development of facilities that will increase participation.”
“We have seen some great results from our Get in the Game initiative since it kicked off in 2012, with more than 67,000 vouchers issued to assist kids who can least afford to participate in sport or recreation.
“We’ve also helped 1,330 clubs with activities to increase participation and approved 360 infrastructure and facilities projects.
“There is more to do though and we will continue with our strong plan for the future.”
