The unsung heroines of the Sunshine Coast community will receive the recognition they deserve thanks to local MP Fiona Simpson and a host of local companies who launched the 2017 Sunshine Coast Inspiring Women
Awards today.
Nominations are now open for the 2017 awards, which are now in their second year.
Supported by Inspire Connecting Communities, Volunteering Sunshine Coast and a host of local businesses, Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson is seeking nominations from women who volunteer their time in the
not-for-profit sector and use their skills to encourage and support others.
Award Patron Fiona Simpson MP today celebrated the success of the inaugural Awards held earlier this year with the four Award winners and event sponsors Think Money, White’s IGA, Sundale and Suncoast Christian College at a lunch held at The Edge Restaurant in Mooloolaba.
Ms Simpson said there had been a fantastic response to the 2016 Awards, with more than 100 nominations received and she was expecting a flood of nominations this year too.
“There are so many amazing women who dedicate their time and skills to help and support others and they deserve to be recognised,” Ms Simpson said.
“Volunteers are the back-bone of the many sporting groups, charities and community organisations which help to build a more vibrant and connected community and many of them are women, who often work quietly behind
the scenes to make things happen.”
Ms Simpson particularly wanted to acknowledge the work of carers and foster parents who support and care for the most vulnerable members of our community.
“Many women provide unpaid care to those who are vulnerable and need support – including people with a disability, mental health issues, chronic medical conditions, terminal illness or those who are frail and aged.
“In particular I want to honour the work of foster parents who take children into their home and given them unconditional love and security.
“Women often take on these caring roles quietly, without recognition and they provide substantial long term support to those in need.
Ms Simpson said that the Award winners will be honoured at a Gala Presentation Dinner to be held as part of International Women’s Day celebrations on 3 March 2017.
“The Awards are supported by some great local companies who have joined with me to champion the women who make a difference in the lives of others,” Ms Simpson said.
“We are also looking to encourage young women under 30 who are leading the way through their achievements in the field of sports, art, fashion, science and innovation and those who are dedicated to serving their community or protecting their environment.
