Urgent action to improve road safety on the Sunshine Motorway south of Coolum was required Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said today, following two recent tragic accidents.
I have taken this up with the new Transport Minister.
“Ultimately the answer will be a major road duplication but in the meantime a relatively simple upgrade with “rumble strips” and wider marked separation between the two carriageways and a lower speed limit would dramatically improve driver compliance,” Ms Simpson said.
“I can’t comment on the reasons for this latest terrible accident, but it will be fully investigated by police.”
“However there are too many accidents happening on what is actually a stretch of road with good visibility and those who pay the price aren’t necessarily always at fault when accidents occur,” Ms Simpson said.
Ms Simpson said the audible tactile line markings, together with wider painted chevrons and the lower speed limit would save lives.
“I will continue to fight for improvements to road safety on this section of the Sunshine Motorway.”
