Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson has welcomed the calling of tenders on the long awaited Maroochydore bus station.
Ms Simpson said preparation work on the site had been finalised, following the clearing of the former Dick Smith and Maroochy House sites.
“While there were some early delays to the project, the bus station is desperately needed and we are committed to pushing ahead and delivering it for the local community,” Ms Simpson said.
“The project is moving into the next phase with major construction due to start early next year.
“Completing the early work took longer than expected due to the relocation of underground services and proper removal of asbestos materials following the demolition of Maroochy House.
“The tender for construction has now gone out to market and is due to be awarded by the end of the year, with major works to start early in the new year, weather permitting.”
Ms Simpson said the final design for the new station had been updated following feedback from the local community.
“To improve pedestrian safety, some traffic conditions in the area will also change as part of the new design.
“Once complete, the new station will improve efficiency and reliability of public transport services across the Sunshine Coast with a large number of buses stopping at Maroochydore.
Transport and Main Roads is funding the bus station, working in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, which is contributing funds for landscaping, street-scaping, public artwork and public toilets.
Sunshine Coast Council Division 8 Councillor Jason Opray said he was pleased to see the construction of the new bus station moving forward.
“The station is a much-needed addition to the area and a fantastic continuation of the works along Cornmeal Creek,” Cr Opray said.
“It’s exciting to see a new urban space being built in Maroochydore.
“This project is a great opportunity for Council and the Queensland Government to work together for the benefit of the Sunshine Coast community.”
