The long-awaited cycle and pedestrian path between the Maroochy River Bridge and Ocean Drive, Pacific Paradise, is set to open to the community today.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the 2.3km path was a vital connection between existing cycling and pedestrian facilities.
“I am really glad to see this pedestrian and cycle link delivered for the Maroochy North Shore and wider community,” Ms Simpson said.
“The link connects the communities of Maroochydore, Twin Waters, Pacific Paradise and Mudjimba.
“Locals will benefit from having this healthy and environmentally-friendly transport alternative.
“I am sure the path will be a huge success among local riders, with input from local cycling groups and council helping guide development of this project.
“Although some of the progress to build the link was impacted by poor weather, it is fantastic to see it completed in time for summer.”
Ms Simpson said cycling was more than just a recreational activity, it was also growing in popularity for people who chose to commute to work where possible by bicycle.
“With more than 814,000 Queenslanders cycling each week, it is important that end-of-ride facilities and cycling networks are developed to support safe and accessible travel by bicycle,” she said.
“I encourage the community to take advantage of this great new project and enjoy the outdoors.”
The new concrete pathway is on the eastern side of the Sunshine Motorway, between Maroochy River Bridge and the existing pathway on David Low Way, near Ocean Drive.
