On-road cycle lanes will be installed on the southern side of David Low Way at Bli Bli to create a safer route for cyclists.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the $600,000 project would improve safety and encourage bike users to use the route.
“This is a great low-cost initiative that promotes healthy and sustainable travel by improving conditions for cyclists,” Ms Simpson said.
“The project will install 1.8km of dedicated cycle lanes on David Low Way between the Maroochy River and Godfreys Road near the Sunshine Motorway.
“The road shoulder on the southern section of the road will be widened to 1.8m to accommodate the new lanes, and line marking will be used to provide a buffer between cyclists and vehicles.
“Construction began this week (Monday 3 December) and is due to be completed by late January 2013.”
Works will generally be carried out between 6am and 6pm.
Two sessions of night works will be required for asphalting.
Some lane closures may be required; however two-lane access will generally be maintained.
Traffic control measures will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists including traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and signage.
