Protecting Mooloolaba Spit from inappropriate development, particularly within the government precinct at the end of Parkyn Parade, is so important.
Many will recall in 2020 I released a leaked document showing the State Government was investigating increasing the height on the site above the current 8.5m (four storey) limit.
On behalf of the community, I protested that this was not on!

Recent advice I have received about State Government plans is more positive about respecting community and stakeholder views, but until all the plans are public and finalised we must remain vigilant.
I am now advised that the “Mooloolaba Marine Operations Base” at the end of the Spit, which also includes the old Marine Pilot Station, will not be sold and that maritime related services such as the water police, fisheries and Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ), along with the shark net operators, will all be co-located there.
I am advised that the current roadway that provides access to the water police and other facilities on the seaside of the precinct is not owned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and has not been included within the concept design plan. I understand this land is under the control of Council.
TMR advise the government plans to demolish and remove the disused contaminated administration building and the unused marine pilot house in preparation for redevelopment of the base. The timing of this work is yet to confirmed. However, this is the reason these facilities are not being leased.
The concept design plan is being finalised in consultation with staff from MSQ. However, it is confirmed that MSQ, Queensland Water Police and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) staff (including the shark contractors) will co-locate on the base.
