Planning for the future location of Coolum’s new police station is now progressing with land being secured at South Coolum Road, Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson announced today.
The Minister for Police and Community Safety, Jack Dempsey has advised that a 6,000m2 parcel of land located at South Coolum Road, adjacent to the Queensland Ambulance Service has been secured by the Queensland Police Service from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Ms Simpson has campaigned for a permanent replacement to the temporary police station at Coolum.
“I will continue to lobby for future funding for the construction of a new police station, but the securing of land is a positive step forward,” Ms Simpson said.
“In the meantime, the Queensland Police Service is extending the lease on the current site in town for a further 3 years.”
“The police will continue to operate from the current police station until the new station is built.”
“The new site will provide faster access to the Sunshine Motorway and is close to the Coolum State Primary School,” Ms Simpson said.Ms Simpson was critical of the previous Labor Government’s failure to plan for a permanent site.
“Instead of purchasing a permanent site in a central location the previous Government opted for a quick fix, spending over $700,000 on a temporary building on leased land in 2005,” Ms Simpson said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing this resolved as we need a long-term solution to Coolum’s policing needs.”
