The high cost of private rental accommodation and long waiting lists for social housing accommodation is a real problem for many Coast residents on a low income.
In response to a question I recently asked in Parliament, the Minister advised me that 34 new units of social housing accommodation are being constructed on the Sunshine Coast this year, with a total of 243 new social housing homes being built here over the next five years, which will be a help.
I am also meeting with social housing providers such as Coast2Bay to try to get some better solutions. I recently learned about a pilot shared housing community project called Better Together which facilitates shared living for women who have retired from work. It connects women who currently have a home to share with those who are looking for a house to share.
