Sunshine Coast boaties and anglers will soon have better access to popular coastal spots with the Newman Government announcing two new floating walkways for Mooloolaba.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the projects would be delivered as part of the $120 million Marine Infrastructure election commitment to improve recreational boating and fishing facilities around the state.
“We’re going to build floating walkways for both the upstream and downstream boat ramps at Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba Harbour,” Ms Simpson said.
“This will greatly increase capacity for boaties who will be able to launch and retrieve boats at the same time.
“Mooloolaba Harbour is an extremely popular spot with locals and tourists in peak holiday seasons, so it’s great news for the community that such an important upgrade is going to take place.”
The first round of projects has been agreed with councils and port authorities, under a partnership agreement with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Across the state, TMR will deliver the in-water works and in some cases councils will provide the landside facilities, road access and parking.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh said the projects would support the growing number of people engaged in boating and fishing.
“These recreational industries are also vital for the state’s tourism, boosting one of the government’s four economic pillars,” he said.
Other projects in this round include:
– reconstruction of a boat ramp with a floating walkway at Cooktown
– replacement of a boat ramp at Gilbert Street in Karumba
– new ramps and pontoons in Ross River, Townsville
– an upgraded boat ramp and floating walkway at the Conway Road boat ramp in the Proserpine River
– dredging in Rosslyn Bay boat harbour
– a new ramp and floating walkway at Burrum Heads in the Wide Bay Burnett region
– floating walkways for the two ramps in Manly Boat Harbour
