Local conservation groups will be given a helping hand to protect our precious environment at the Maroochy River Conservation Park in Twin Waters under an LNP Government.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson, who secured land at Twin Waters for conservation under the former LNP Government, today announced a $50,000 funding commitment to help continue works to revegetate and
restore this area.
Ms Simpson announced the 15 hectare expansion of the Maroochy River Conservation Park (MRCP) in 2014 under the former LNP Government and lobbied for the land previously leased by the Novotel Twin Waters Resort to be included in the conservation park and protected from development.
Ms Simpson said that she was committed to ensuring that the precious environment in the Maroochy North Shore area was protected and she had been successful in protecting two parcels of land from development. In addition to the expansion of the MRCP, Ms Simpson had lobbied to ensure the old Point Arkwright Police reserve was transferred into the adjacent Yinneburra Bushland Conservation Reserve in 2016.
Ms Simpson acknowledged the hard work of the Mudjimba Bush Care Group and the Coolum and North Shore Coast Care Group who had removed weeds and planted local native plants in the newly expanded MRCP to restore this neglected piece of land which formed a vital missing link in the conservation park.
“Local residents are very keen to see our precious natural environment protected and this land appropriately maintained and revegetated with native plants,” Ms Simpson said.
“These funds will help the fantastic restoration work carried out by local groups to continue and ensure the unique flora and fauna of this area is protected into the future.
“I would also like to see more interpretative signage to educate people about the importance of protecting our native plants and wildlife.
President of Coolum and North Shore Coast Care Leigh Warneminde said that the expansion of the Maroochy River Conservation Park had been an important win for the local environment as it provided the missing link
between two parts of the conservation park that were previously separated.
“Fiona has been working with the local community and lobbying for this area to be restored for conservation and I am pleased that this funding will help this work to continue,” Ms Warneminde said.
