Turning on to David Low Way from Mudjimba Esplanade and vice versa is a problem.
The safety at this intersection has worsened with the increased traffic on the overall network. Local residents advise that as the Sunshine Motorway has become more congested, more traffic is opting to use David Low Way instead.
I have made representations to the Minister and the Department of Transport and Main Roads about this intersection and met with their engineers on site.
Previous advice received was that it wasn’t at the top of their black spot list for safety compared to other sites based on the accident history to date, but it was being considered for upgrade options subject to money.
They advised that funding was prioritised on the basis of accident history and that their previous requests for funding had been rejected as a result compared to more dangerous sites.
Some of the investigations involved consideration of a more effective safer slip lane around right-turning traffic (north-bound) on the David Low Way, as well as possible traffic lights with warning lights to the south, given the bend in the road can obscure stopped traffic ahead.
I will be pursuing this again with the Department and the current Transport Minister.
