Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson has welcomed news that a dangerous section of Yandina-Coolum Road faces a safety review. Ms Simpson said Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson had responded to concerns raised by her on behalf of Coolum residents for a review of the speed limit on a dangerous section between Toolborough and Quanda Roads. She said the Minister had agreed to undertake a review of the current 100 km/hr speed limit and the need for a safety guardrail along the steep embankment would also be assessed. “There have been countless accidents along this stretch of the road in the past five years, three of which have tragically been fatal,” Ms Simpson said. “I raised this with the previous Minister and was advised that the speed limit recommended in 2005 should be retained. However, this road continues to be of major concern to road users.” Ms Simpson believes that there has been a significant increase in local traffic in this area due to the development of the Coolum Christian College, the industrial site at Quanda Road and the quarry in Toolborough Road. “I have urged the Minister to consider both a speed review with a view to lowering the speed and the installation of a guard rail in this area as there has been a history of vehicles running off the road into the deep drain alongside the narrow road.” “The mix of large trucks and school traffic in this area is a cause for concern.” Ms Simpson said. “Residents are worried there is very little room for error with the steep drop off along both sides of this narrow road.” The outcome of this review will be eagerly awaited by Coolum residents.
