Pedestrian safety on Aerodrome Road will be improved with a new signalised pedestrian crossing between May Street and Fourth Avenue.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said works would start this week.
“The new facility will provide a safer and easier crossing for pedestrians on Aerodrome Road,” Ms Simpson said.
“Local residents have lobbied for an extra crossing and this a good outcome for the local community who crosses this road to access local shops and eateries.
“The location was chosen following investigations that looked at factors such as crash history, safety and pedestrian convenience.
“This site delivers a positive outcome for pedestrian safety and I’m pleased to be able to provide this important improvement for the local community.”
Ms Simpson said the works were expected to be completed in about three weeks.
“For safety reasons, the new crossing will require the removal of the right turn from May Street into Aerodrome Road,” she said.
“Previous traffic counts have indicated right turns at this intersection are low.
“New signage will be installed to alert motorists of the change.”
To minimise impacts on local businesses and traffic, works will be carried out at night between 6pm and 6am.
