The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have advised that design is underway to provide safer pedestrian crossings in Maroochydore’s CBD.
The project will improve safety for all road users at the Maroochydore-Mooloolaba Road (known as Horton Parade) and Ocean Street intersection at Maroochydore.
The project will encourage pedestrians to use the additional and improved crossings when moving between shopping, hospitality and education venues in the area.
The proposed design includes:
- removing the left-turn slip lanes and modifying the traffic signals to control motorists when turning in and out of Ocean Street
- constructing a new signalised pedestrian crossing across Beach Road to provide an additional crossing point to and from Ocean Street
- upgrading the existing signalised pedestrian crossings at this intersection
- installing additional pedestrian fencing on the median along Horton Parade to Cornmeal Parade
- new footpath connections.
The improvements will be delivered as part of the Queensland Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety by implementing high-benefit, cost-effective treatments at known and potential crash locations.
Detailed design is expected to be completed in early 2022, with construction anticipated to start late 2022, weather and construction scheduling permitting.
