Maroochydore has received a $15,000 funding boost from the Newman Government to support local events under the latest round of the Events Queensland Regional Development Program (EQRDP).
Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey, said the Newman Government was proud to continue investing in Maroochydore as an events destination.
“The Newman Government recognises the important role events play in attracting visitors to regional areas,” Ms Stuckey said.
“That is why we are pleased to support local events in Maroochydore.”
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the funding would deliver tourism, social and economic benefits to the community.
“Tourism is one of the four pillars of the economy and the Newman Government recognises the importance of events in helping us reach our goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020,” Ms Simpson said.
“It is great to see our local events being supported by the State Government.”
Events to receive funding include:
· Outrigger Canoe National Marathon Titles, Mooloolaba – An annual event attracting the best outrigger paddlers from across Australia to compete across a variety of marathon events. Held 18-19 May 2013. Funding amount of $10,000.
· Mooloolaba Ocean Festival, Mooloolaba – Featuring the Mooloolaba Ocean Swim, offering varied distances for all ages and ability. Held 24 August 2013. Funding amount of $5,000 through a Minister’s Development Grant.
Minister Stuckey said strong support throughout the region was crucial to the ongoing success of the program.
“These events are delivered in partnership with local communities and that collaborative effort is vital to their success,” Ms Stuckey said.
“EQRDP, with the support of bodies including Regional Tourism Organisations, helps deliver tourism benefits and promote regional destinations to a wider audience.
“The latest round of the EQRDP will provide an extra $1.4 million in support across 58 regional events throughout the state – ranging from cultural celebrations to triathlons, music festivals, water sports, and food and wine festivals.”
More than $21 million has been invested in 976 events through the Events Queensland Regional Development Program since 2001. The next EQRDP funding round closes 15 February 2013 for events held between 1 October 2013 and 31 March 2015.
