LNP proposes new laws which will prevent sex offenders from being released back onto the street with minimal supervision.
The LNP has proposed that sex offenders who cannot be rehabilitated should not be released back into the community, and that that Police are given greater powers to monitor and identify dangerous sex offenders, in order to ensure the safety of Queenslanders from sex offenders.
According to government reports, many sex offenders are disappearing once released back into the community, and are receiving only minimal supervision from police.
The current Bligh Government scheme to protect Queenslanders from released sex offenders has failed, with many sex offenders re-offending once released back into the community, or disappearing from supervision altogether.
Ms Simpson is concerned about the safety of communities under the current ineffective laws. “The current supervision orders are simply not working, with sex offenders unable to be located by police and others reoffending while under supervision orders,” said Ms Simpson.
Under the LNP’s legislation currently before the House, serial sex offenders who cannot be rehabilitated will not be released from prison, and police will be given greater powers to monitor dangerous sex offenders who have disappeared while under supervision orders.
