Punishment for Violence against Police

Tuesday, 1 June 2010

The LNP proposes that a minimum of 3 months jail be mandatory for violence against police or emergency services workers.

Serious assault against police and emergency services workers will be rewarded with a minimum of three months in jail under the LNP proposal before State Parliament.

A copy of the proposal can be viewed at http://www.jplangbroek.com/protecting-police-and-emergency-services/

The laws are aimed at creating a stronger deterrent against attacking police and emergency services workers, sending a clear message to offenders that violence will not be tolerated. This will also give emergency services workers greater protection as they work to keep the streets safe.

Ms Simpson said the current laws are not protecting police or emergency services. “In a recent court case on the Sunshine Coast an offender who seriously assaulted a police officer was only given nine months probation and ordered to pay $800 compensation – which didn’t even cover the cost of the police officer’s medical expenses,” said Ms Simpson.

Ms Simpson said this bill will discourage individuals from attacking police and emergency services workers, and provide a real consequence to criminals who do assault them.
