Smart Licence? Or Smart way to extort Queenslanders’ Money?

Tuesday, 1 June 2010

The Bligh government is doubling the fees for Queensland driver licences with costs rising up to $152.50, with the introduction of new smart licence over the next few years.

Drivers are facing a 108% increase in cost for driver licences with the government’s new “smart” card as fees will go from $73.30 up to a staggering $152.50.

Fiona Simpson suggests that the increase in licence fees has been put forward in reaction to the project running over budget, as the “smart” card project has had a cost blow-out of $64 million – with a total cost of more than $84 million.

And despite running over budget, questions about the use and roll out of the “smart” cards have still not been answered by the Bligh government.

Fiona Simpson has said, “Queenslanders are literally being taxed off the roads as this increase comes on top of vehicle registration hikes, higher toll fares and the introduction of the fuel tax which has made Queensland fuel prices consistently among the highest in nation.”

Fiona Simpson has launched a petition against this price rise. This can be found at the Parliamentary website (www.parliament.qld.gov.au under Petitions); a hard copy of the petition is also available at Fiona’s office (Cnr First and Memorial Aves, Maroochydore).
