An LNP Government will commit $10 million over four years to improve the safety of Queensland’s school zones with flashing warning signs for active school zones.
Extensive community consultation with schools and motorists has led to the development of an LNP school zone safety policy. Fiona Simpson and LNP Leader John Paul Langbroek have announced that when in government the LNP will commit to $10 million over four years to improving the safety of school zones.
Motorists will be alerted that they are entering an active school with warning lights which will flash when school zones are operational.
“The flashing school zone lights will act as a reminder for drivers to slow down. Research shows about 60 per cent of motorists who speed through school zones have forgotten what time of day it is, and that the zones are active. This will help drivers remember,” Ms Simpson has said.
The LNP emphasised the importance of increasing the safety of children in school zones “More than 10,000 motorists were fined for speeding through school zones in 2007-08 — we need to make sure that confusion over school zone times does not place children’s lives at risk” said Mr Langbroek.
The policy will ensure that the new warning system is installed in a minimum of 75 schools each year, with schools in high crash and busy traffic areas the first to receive the safety measures.
