THE Bligh Labor Government had added another broken promise to their growing list of betrayals with moves to push back the rail line to Maroochydore by another six years, the LNP transport spokeswoman Fiona Simpson said today.
On top of the delay in constructing the new hospital at Kawana, the CAMCOS rail line to the urban areas of Coast has been pushed back beyond 2031 a leaked Labor Government transport document shows. This is despite Government plans to accelerate population growth.
“Before the election, this Labor Government lied to the Sunshine Coast about building the hospital in the first term and now we see they’ve lied about the rail line,” Ms Simpson said.
“After seeing this document, I now know why they protest too much about the LNP’s plan released at the last election to change the CAMCOS project to light rail instead of heavy rail in order to provide access to the new Sunshine Coast hospital.
“Labor are two faced about the two Coasts. They support a light rail on the Gold Coast which connects their new hospital to their population centres and doesn’t initially connect to the heavy rail but they reject exactly the same proposal for the Sunshine Coast.
“This is their smokescreen for building neither the hospital or any rail – light or heavy – on the Sunshine Coast.
“The Bligh Labor Government had previously talked about a future rail link reaching Maroochydore by 2026, but a draft report Connecting SEQ 2031 makes no mention of Maroochydore and the Kawana link being only by 2031.
“Originally the CAMCOS rail link from Beerwah to Caloundra was supposed to be built by 2015 but that has been quietly sunk by this deceitful government.”
“The people of the Sunshine Coast have been lied to about when we could get a new hospital, and now it appears we have been lied about when we will get the public transport we need. “
Ms Simpson said the Bligh Labor Government was pushing high growth targets on to the Sunshine Coast but failing to invest the public transport needed to cope with that growth.
“This new rail service for the Sunshine Coast is looking more and more like a ghost train that is never going to turn up under Labor,” she said.
