International Volunteer Day
Volunteers illustrated the spirit and pride in being a Queenslander, the State Opposition said today.
Shadow Minister for Community Services Fiona Simpson said International Volunteer Day today was a great opportunity to celebrate our sense of community and the contribution volunteers make to our great state.
“Volunteers give their time generously towards making their communities stronger and better,” said Ms Simpson.
“This year certainly proved a volunteer is an ordinary Queenslander moved to do extraordinary things – often for complete strangers.
“Many worked long hours dealing with the damage caused by Mother Nature and were confronted with great and very emotional challenges – some risking their lives to help others.
“This year thousands of volunteers sacrificed time with family and friends to help others during the floods and cyclones.
“They deserve the support and respect of all Queenslanders.
“Other volunteers give their time every day – reaching out to help others, whether it be lending a friendly ear, providing company to soothe loneliness, by delivering meals or helping deliver other community services.
“Our valued volunteers deserve our highest respect and deepest gratitude.
“Today is a great opportunity to prove the Queensland spirit is alive and well,” Ms Simpson said.
