LNP proudly supports White Ribbon Day
LNP Shadow Minister for Women Fiona Simpson said the LNP’s solid support for White Ribbon Day will assist in spreading the campaign’s message throughout the state.
“Today is an important day to raise awareness of violence against women. It’s a tragedy that Queensland has the highest rate of homicides resulting from domestic violence for all Australia - with 30 per cent of homicides last year being related to domestic violence,” Ms Simpson said.
“As Shadow Minister for Women, I’m proud of my male colleagues, both MPs and candidates, for taking the oath to eliminate violence against women.”
Ms Simpson said it was also appropriate that a CanDo LNP Government will give an additional $750,000 funding over three years to the Women’s Legal Service.
“The dedicated staff of the Women’s Legal Service helps around 5000 women across Queensland each year by providing free legal information and advice on issues such as domestic violence, protection orders, rape and incest.
“Across Australia, one in three women over the age of 15 will be the victim of violence in her life with one in five being the victim of sexual violence so it’s important to have a practical plan to help them.
“Unfortunately, this tired, 20-year-old Labor Government denied sustainable funding for the vital service and had forced the shutdown of a phone advisory service for country women.
“It’s unfortunate during a week of positive messages in support of important women’s issues - that the Labor Minister for Women Karen Struthers only wants to launch vitriolic political attacks.
“The LNP is committed to protecting women and children from domestic violence, and encouraging them to speak out. The LNP is proud to be associated with the campaign.
“White Ribbon Day, held annually on 25th November, is a significant and influential awareness campaign that deserves support and encouragement.”
