Longer term solution needed for bar

STATE MP Fiona Simpson has called for longer-term sand pumping solutions to be investigated for the Mooloolah River Mouth.

Ms Simpson welcomed news that recent dredging had successfully cleared the shoaling at the mouth of the river which had caused havoc over Christmas-New Year. However, she said it was time for an independent investigation of the best long-term solution and maintenance program around the vitally important Mooloolaba Harbour Entrance.

“The sand-pumping pipeline which is periodically attached to a dredge, an arrangement between Queensland Transport and Council, has helped also replenish Mooloolaba Beach and sand on the Spit.

This arrangement has certainly been a step forward compared to the previous dredging arrangement, but as we’ve seen recently, there needs to be more urgent intervention when the
build up of sand exceeds expectations and a longer term solution is also required,” Ms Simpson said.

“I believe more regular works need to be funded and that all solutions need to be considered. Whether that means extending the rock wall or using a different pumping arrangement, these are just some of the possible solutions that have been raised with me.

“There needs to be a scientific study of the best way to improve and maintain this channel while also benefiting local beaches.”

Ms Simpson has taken up the issue with the Minister for Fisheries and Marine Infrastructure and asked for a meeting to discuss a more permanent solution.
