Labor gaffer tapes broken Bribie bridge

Gaffer tape and garden ties are holding together part of the Bribie Island Bridge, the State Opposition said today.

LNP Shadow Minister for Main Roads and Transport, Fiona Simpson MP said this is yet another example of the Bligh Labor government’s failure to properly maintain Queensland’s road network.

“Clearly the maintenance of Queensland’s roads is placed far behind Labor’s misplaced priorities,” said Ms Simpson.

“I call on the government to put Queenslanders’ lives and road safety first and review their maintenance program following the State Opposition’s revelation of this unacceptable practice.

“Almost four months have passed since the bridge was damaged by a truck, well before the recent floods and cyclones.  The government cannot use mother nature as an excuse for this band aid fix.

“It is shocking that when it comes to fixing and improving our State’s roads, the best the Bligh government can do is nip into the backyard shed for some garden ties and gaffer tape.

“Unfortunately this is symptomatic of Labor’s wider maintenance practices.”

Ms Simpson’s discovery of Labor’s patch-up job, comes off the back of the RACQ’s recent report finding Queensland's National Highways are failing with 89 percent in the high or medium-high risk category.

That statistic is greater than any other State.

“I support the RACQ’s recommendation that significant investment is needed and urgently, into improving Queensland roads,” Ms Simpson said.
