Appeal for Sunshine Motorway safety measures following another tragic accident

I am shocked and saddened by news of yet another tragic accident on the Sunshine Motorway near Coolum.  Any death is one too many but the latest incident involving a mother and her child dying in a collision with a bus is truly tragic.

I have appealed again to the Minister about the need for this high speed carriage way to be upgraded to a divided carriage way with separation between oncoming traffic.

While this road has good visibility, there are no passing lanes and no forgiveness in the road design if people stray across the centre line or take risks and overtake slower moving traffic.

I appealed to the Minister for urgent safety measures to be introduced following a fatality last year at this notorious section south of Coolum. The  Minister advised that the Department of Transport and Main Roads would consider the feasibility of implementing a range of measures to improve safety such as lowering the speed limit and erecting advisory signage.

Since that time there have been two further serious accidents and the loss of two lives, but the State Government is yet to take action.

Roads in high volume areas have to be designed to a higher level as a result to separate oncoming traffic at speed as much as is possible I am pursuing the issue of the Sunshine Motorway again with the Minister for Main Roads.
